Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a skilled worker to operate tandem dump trucks and various medium to heavy equipment in highway maintenance and repair projects. You will support ditching, shoulder work, pipe laying, and flag traffic to protect crews in work zones.

A valid driver's license is required, with Class A CDL to be obtained within six months. Physical fitness to lift up to 50 lbs and endure extended shifts in inclement weather is essential.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required; CDL (Class A) within six months.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in variable conditions.

• Operate tandem dump trucks hauling materials in maintenance and repair operations.
• Operate medium equipment (belt loader) in shoulder and ditching operations.
• Operate heavy equipment (backhoe, motor grader) for ditching, shoulder work, and pipe laying.
• Flag traffic to protect workers in work zones.
• Assist with on‑call repairs after hours.
• Assist with emergency and inclement weather operations; extended hours or 12‑hour shifts possible.
• Operate small equipment (trailer mounted pipe washer) as needed.

Job Responsibilities

• Operates tandem dump trucks hauling various materials as necessary in maintenance and repair operations.


• Operates medium equipment such as belt loader as needed in shoulder and ditching operations.


• Operates medium equipment such as large roller compacting materials such as base materials, asphalt, etc.


• Assists in the operation of heavy equipment such as backhoe and motor grader used in ditching, shoulder work, and pipe laying operations.


• Flags traffic to control the flow of traffic to protect workers within the work zone.


• Assists with on‑call repairs after hours.


• Assist with emergency and inclement weather operation, may include extended hours and/ or 12 hours shifts.


• Operates small equipment such as trailer mounted pipe washer as needed in shoulder and ditching operations.

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
