Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to operate tools and equipment for drainage structure maintenance and to support field operations along highways and bridges.

The role includes setting up and directing traffic in work zones as a flagger, operating dump trucks, forklifts, and other equipment, handling snow/ice removal, and supporting emergency response and adverse weather shifts as needed.

Qualifications

• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• CDL Class A must be obtained within six (6) months of placement.

Job Responsibilities

Operates powered tools and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities associated with installation and maintenance of drainage structures. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Operates small equipment such as a dump truck or forklift. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Operates standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highway and bridges. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
