Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance assistant to operate tools and equipment for traffic sign upkeep and to assist in placing traffic control devices. Responsibilities

• Operates powered tools and hand tools to perform maintenance on traffic signs.
• Assists with placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in work zones.
• Operates small equipment such as a dump truck and/or forklift.
• Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals.
• Operates dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader for snow/ice removal.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Operates powered tools and hand tools to perform a variety of maintenance activities associated with installation and repair of traffic signs. Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Operates small equipment such as a dump truck and/or forklift. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Operates standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highway and bridges. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as signed.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
