South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled equipment operator to drive and maintain highway maintenance vehicles and support crews. You will operate dump trucks and flatbeds, run various small equipment, and assist in traffic control within work zones.

No minimum training or experience is required for entry; however, a Class A CDL must be obtained within six months. Safety and readiness for extended shifts in adverse weather are essential.

• Operate 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe and debris.
• Assists with placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones and serves as a flagger.
• Operates and maintains power tools and hand tools for highway and bridge maintenance activities.
• Conducts pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with state rules and procedures.
• Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Operates 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Operates small equipment such as Asphalt Kettle, Brine Sprayer, Brush Chipper, Concrete Mixer, Forklift, Litter Picker, Roller <= 4 tons, self-contained sweeper tractor with broom, tractor with mower <= 10' wide, and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges. Operates small equipment such as Asphalt Kettle, Brine Sprayer, Brush Chipper, Concrete Mixer, Forklift, Litter Picker, Roller <= 4 tons, self-contained sweeper tractor with broom, tractor with mower <= 10' wide, and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists with placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Operates heavier equipment such as front-end loaders, belt loaders, tractor with ditcher, specialized mowers, trailer-mounted injection patcher and backhoes. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment /vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety. Operates and maintains power tools and hand tools to perform a variety of highway and bridge maintenance activities. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
