Job summary

New Mexico Department of Justice is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker to operate medium to heavy equipment to repair and maintain interstate, roads, highways, bridges and related structures throughout District One.

The ideal candidate will have at least six months of experience with dump trucks, loaders, backhoes and other heavy equipment, hold a valid driver's license (Class B with potential Class A within nine months), and be able to perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs.

Qualifications

  • Six months' experience operating heavy equipment listed (dump trucks, loader, backhoe, broom, etc.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license; Class B CDL within six months; Class A CDL within nine months
  • Hazard endorsements (Herbicide, Tanker, Hazmat) may be required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb and work in varying weather
  • Ability to use a computer and hand tools for maintenance

Why does the job exist?

This position will operate medium to heavy duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner to repair and maintain interstate, roads, roadways, highways, bridges and structures, and erosion repairs throughout District One for the safety of the traveling public.

How does it get done?

By Operating medium to heavy duty equipment. Utilize hand and power tools. Perform operator level maintenance on equipment and tools.

Who are the customers?

The traveling public and pedestrians.

Ideal Candidate
  • Six (6) months experience operating 10 yard dump truck, loader, backhoe, mower w/attachments, Blade, roller, broom and other light to heavy duty equipment.
  • Ability to repair and maintain roadways and bridges, guardrail, fences and other roadway features.
  • Perform operator level preventive maintenance checks and services on equipment and tools.
  • Ability to utilize a computer.
  • Ability to utilize hand tools to service, clean, maintain and repair equipment, buildings, grounds and fixtures.

Preference will be given to applicants with a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Six (6) months of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, five (5) and ten (10) yard dump trucks, self-propelled brooms, rollers, or mowers. Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker, and/or Hazmat endorsement.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. A Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire and Class A Commercial Driver's License within nine (9) months of hire is required. Must pass demonstrative abilities with a 75% or better to advance to the interview. Business reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow, exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash, exposure to hazardous chemicals, insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, stressful situations, subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain, high speed/high volume traffic, interaction with the public, local county, school and city officials by phone an in person, irregular hours day or night, subject to call out for emergencies, heavy lifting, sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays; extended or irregular hours day or night; and call-out away from post of duty to include night time work and snow removal as applicable are required.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
