Job summary

The New Mexico Department of Transportation is seeking an Associate Highway Maint Worker for the San Ysidro Patrol to operate light to medium equipment and maintain highways for public safety.

This safety-sensitive role requires a Class B CDL within six months of hire, plus pre-employment and random testing, and a post-offer physical and drug screen; external hires may receive three days of administrative leave at start. Knowledge of snow removal is a plus.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while promoting economic development and preserving New Mexico's environment.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the Stare of New Mexico Government.

This position operates light to medium equipment in a safe and efficient manner to maintain highways and roadways for the safety of the traveling public. This position is with the San Ysidro Patrol.

How does it get done?

By operating various types of light to medium-duty equipment, maintaining highways and roadways throughout the District.

Traveling public and pedestrians.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in:

  • Operating light to medium-duty equipment.
  • Guardrail/fence repair.
  • Performing snow removal operations on roadways.

Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act.
Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), within six (6) months of hire. Tanker endorsement may be required. Business reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 65% or better.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to: Sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; Moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; Temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations.
High speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; Falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; Standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather (including snow removal), accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public. Frequent statewide travel is required. Must be able to respond to emergency call-outs on short notice.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
