Job summary

The New Mexico Department of Justice is seeking an Associate Highway Maintenance Worker to operate light to medium duty equipment across District One, repairing and maintaining interstate, roads, roadways, highways, bridges and structures to ensure traveler safety.

The ideal candidate has six months of experience with specified equipment, the ability to repair and maintain roadways and structures, can perform preventive maintenance checks, use a computer, and handle hand tools.

Qualifications

  • Six (6) months experience operating various light to medium duty equipment such as 5-yard dump trucks, loaders, rollers, broom, or similar gear.
  • Ability to repair and maintain roadways, bridges, guardrails and fences.
  • Ability to perform operator level preventive maintenance checks and services on equipment and tools.
  • Ability to utilize a computer for reporting or data entry.
  • Ability to use hand tools to service, clean, maintain and repair equipment, buildings, grounds and fixtures.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with a Class "B or A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Responsibilities

  • Operate light to medium duty equipment to repair and maintain interstate highways, roads, roadsides and related structures.
  • Perform operator level maintenance checks and servicing on equipment and tools.
  • Utilize hand and power tools for cleaning, maintaining and repairing equipment and facilities.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain records as required.

Why does the job exist?

This position will operate light to medium duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner to repair and maintain interstate, roads, roadways, highways, bridges and structures, and erosion repairs throughout District One for the safety of the traveling public.

How does it get done?

By operating light to medium duty equipment. Utilize hand and power tools. Perform operator level maintenance on equipment and tools.

Who are the customers?

The traveling public and pedestrians.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Six (6) months experience operating 5-yard dump truck, loader, roller, broom, and/or light duty equipment.
  • Ability to repair and maintain roadways, bridges, guardrail and fences.
  • Ability to perform operator level preventive maintenance checks and services on equipment and tools.
  • Ability to utilize a computer.
  • Ability to utilize hand tools to service, clean, maintain and repair equipment, buildings, grounds and fixtures.
  • Preference can be given to applicants with a Class "B or A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety-sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. A Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire is required. Must pass demonstrative abilities with a 65% or better to advance to the interview. Business reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
