Highway Maintenance Worker 1/ Trainee 1/ Trainee 2 (Region 9 - Otsego) Temp

Position offered by NYS Department of Transportation. Salary range $48,855.00/yr - $58,743.00/yr.

Duties Description

Individuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions.

• Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all weather conditions.
• Operate plows during winter operations and obtain the required equipment certifications.
• Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test, and possess a Class D Driver License.
• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test, and possess a Class A/B Commercial Driver License with no air‑brake restriction. Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment. Failure to pass will result in termination.
• Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience operating highway construction or maintenance equipment, or other vehicles with GVWR >26,000 and air brakes, possession of a Class A/B Commercial Driver License, DOT‑specified endorsements, two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications, and the following three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one‑person plowing (single or double wing), and front‑end loader. Must complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within two weeks of employment or be terminated.

All candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is prohibited and will be tested for during the pre‑employment screening process.

Additional Remarks

Candidates who meet both of the following may be eligible to bypass the pre‑employment physical: a valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate (form MCSA 5876) that meets specific criteria discussed at the time of interview.

• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: $48,855 (base $39,855 + geographic $9,000)
• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: $51,058 (base $42,058 + geographic $9,000)
• Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $53,430 (base $44,430 + geographic $9,000)
