Job summary

Hendry County Government is seeking a hands-on Road Maintenance worker to support the Road and Bridge Department. You will trim vegetation, operate mowing equipment, and manage tools and safety in and around work zones.

The role includes assisting with surveying, installing signs, directing traffic, and maintaining drainage structures to keep roads safe and accessible for the public in a full-time, on-site position.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma, GED, or Certificate of Completion.
  • Class E Driver's License.
  • Prior experience in road/bridge maintenance or grounds work is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Trims foliage, clears brush, cuts grass and weeds with hand tools.
  • Operates a tractor for mowing and may supervise inmate crews.
  • Maintains tools and equipment; sharpens blades and secures gear after use.
  • Cleans culverts and catch basins; places traffic cones and signs in road work zones.
  • Directs and flags traffic; participates in road surface work and asphalt tamping.
  • Assists with repairing and replacing road signs and posts, surveying work.

Job description

Purpose of Job

Performs a variety of duties in order to maintain County roads, bridges, rights‑of‑way and easements in a safe condition, such as cutting and trimming weeds and grass, maintaining culverts and ditches, directing and flagging traffic, debris removal, installing signs, and marking work zones.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Trims foliage, clears brush, cuts grass and weeds with hand tools and light power operated machines.
  • Operates a tractor for mowing and supervises inmate work crews as needed.
  • Maintains, repairs, cleans and properly secures tools and equipment after use. Sharpens mower blades and other cutting tools.
  • Cleans and clears culverts and catch basins with hand tools.
  • Ensures the safety of co‑workers in work zones. Places traffic cones and work signs on road, right‑of‑way and/or easements. Directs and flags traffic in and around work zones.
  • Performs various duties within work zones. Sweeps and tacks road surfaces, shovels, levels, and tampes asphalt.
  • Performs digging and filling as needed. Assists in cleaning‑up work area, and loading and unloading tools and equipment on trailers.
  • Performs a variety of duties in support of the Road and Bridge Department.
  • Assists with repairing and replacing road signs and posts.
  • Assists with conducting surveying work.
  • Picks up debris from roadways, rights‑of‑way, easements and clears in and around shop area, office buildings and parking lots.
  • Assists operators with elevation readings.
  • Assists surveyor as directed.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates non‑CDL trucks
  • Responds to work during a declared state of disaster.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
  • High School diploma, GED, or Certificate of Completion.
  • Class E Driver's License
Hours of Work
  • Assigned Road & Bridge Compound, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday – Thursday
  • Overtime may be required
Starting Range
  • Minimum $16.00 per hour. Pay depends on skills and qualifications.
  • This is a full‑time position that includes County medical benefits and State Retirement.
