Job summary

Anne Arundel County is seeking a Full Time, Permanent Safety Sensitive Maintenance Worker I for the Department of Public Works, Highways division. Responsibilities

  • Perform heavy manual labor on roads, drainage, and maintenance projects.

  • Maintain road rights of way, plant and trim shrubbery, mow grass, and clean areas.
  • Paint and repair bleachers, signs, and field areas; stripe roads as needed.
  • Operate power tools and equipment as required for duties.
  • Assist with landfill grounds, debris removal, and related tasks.

Job description

This posting will be used to fill a Full Time, Permanent, Safety Sensitive Maintenance Worker I position with the Department of Public Works, Highways division. It is manual labor in the performance of unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for performing heavy manual labor which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill or previous experience in order to do an effective job. As work experience is gained, employees of this class may be assigned to somewhat more difficult and responsible tasks. Work assignments are detailed, and the work is subject to review by a superior while in progress and upon completion.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. They are not intended to include all of the essential functions of all positions in the class.)

Works as a member of a road or storm drain maintenance and minor construction crew doing such jobs as pouring and shoveling asphalt and concrete, tamping and smoothing asphalt; digs out holes with manual and automatic digging tools, and fills depressions with slag, gravel, or other materials; picks up debris on streets; cleans and repairs storm drains and drainage ditches; works as a member of a mosquito control crew.

Works, when so assigned, as a member of a maintenance and minor construction crew; plants, waters, sprays, and trims shrubbery and flowers; mows grass; lines playing fields; rakes, rolls, and sweeps baseball diamonds and tennis courts; paints and repairs bleachers, backstops, and benches; and picks up trash.

Works as a member of a crew in painting crosswalks and messages on roads, installing and maintaining traffic and street signs, and in the striping of the roads.

Performs laboring duties at a county landfill such as cleaning buildings and grounds, directing trucks at working base of landfill, cutting grass, and related duties.

Operates power tools and related equipment as a necessary adjunct to performance of regular assignments or on a relief or seasonal basis.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to acquire some skill in the use of equipment and hand tools used in the area of assignment.

Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Education: Sufficient education to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Experience/Other Requirements

A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) And Alcohol testing.

NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • Experience with grass cutting, road side litter pick-up, cleaning buildings, maintaining grounds
  • Ability to lift up to 90 lbs. alone, lifting up to 180 lbs. with partner.
  • Digging ditches and working with asphalt using hand tools.
  • Experience and proficiency operating a chain saw, pole saw, weedwhacker, tamper, and lawnmower.
  • Possession of a Flagger Certification.
  • Willingness to work a twelve-hour shift during emergency conditions on an as needed basis.
  • Willingness to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
