Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation's Lexington Maintenance seeks a skilled truck operator to haul materials, place traffic signs, and perform routine vehicle maintenance. This position requires a Class A CDL within six months of placement and offers on-site work in Lexington County.

The role involves operating tandem dump trucks, stocking signs and materials, and working in variable weather with potential extended hours to support hazardous weather responses.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or equivalent.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A CDL within six months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operate a tandem truck to haul materials to and from the job site.
• Operate a truck to pick up materials from vendors and take to job site or stock pile at section shed.
• Perform preventive maintenance and keep the truck clean.
• Maintain the necessary records as required.
• Erect and replace official traffic control signs on Departments right-of-way in conformance with SCMUTCD.
• Check assigned areas daily and adjust signs to ensure they are plumb and neat."
• Keep detailed records of days worked, missing, damaged, and new signs.
• Perform a daily pre-check of the truck to ensure it is safe to operate.
• Ensure an adequate stock of signs, posts, and materials on the sign truck.
• Set up traffic control for road closures and work zones.
• Set up includes signs, barricades, cones, or barrels to warn motorists of hazards.
• Operate and maintain a small hand machine to place pavement markings for small jobs.
• Install markings such as stop bars, railroad markings and arrows when needed.
• Operate a small paint machine to paint islands, concrete medians, and other small jobs.
• Operate tandem dump trucks during emergencies and hazardous weather operations.
• May be required to work extended hours or 12 hour shifts.
• May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
