Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a highway maintenance worker to perform general maintenance, operate medium equipment, install signs and pavement markings, and manage traffic control in a busy county with interstate corridors.

Applicants must have at least 6 months of related experience or an approved equivalence, a valid license, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months. Physical tasks include lifting up to 50 lbs and working under varied weather.

  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general highway maintenance functions and operates medium equipment including Tandem Dump Truck, Tractor with large mower (>10' wide), and Large Roller (>4 tons).
  • Performs routine signing duties such as sign maintenance and replacement, new sign installations and pavement marking installations in a large county with interstate.
  • Sets up traffic control according to SC MUTCD standards and conducts pre-trip equipment inspections.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Performs general highway maintenance functions and operates medium equipment including, but not limited to, Tandem Dump Truck, Tractor with large mower (<10' wide), and Large Roller > 4 tons. Performs routine signing duties such as, but not limited to, sign maintenance and replacement, new sign installations and pavement marking installations in a large county with interstate. Performs new sign installations as directed by Traffic Engineering. Also installs and replaces pavement markings as needed to ensure traffic safety. Sets up traffic control according to SC MUTCD standards to warn motorists of road work ahead. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Operates hand power tools such as post drivers, portable band saws, chainsaws and drills in daily maintenance operations. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges during inclement weather. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
