Job summary

The Road Commission for Oakland County seeks a Director of Highway Maintenance to lead the HM Department, develop annual work plans, and allocate a multimillion-dollar budget to keep Michigan roads safe and well maintained. The role reports to the Deputy Managing Director/County Highway Engineer and oversees district staff, MDOT coordination, and emergency operations.

Qualifications

• Proven effective leadership and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems and formulate recommendations utilizing critical thinking.
• Capable of managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with attention to detail while using strong organizational and prioritization skills.

Responsibilities

• Develops a financial plan that becomes an annual budget, including materials, labor, contracts and preservation work.
• Supervises staff, handles hiring/termination decisions, schedules work, and conducts performance appraisals.
• Maintains regular communication with District Superintendents, forepersons and HQ staff about workload and concerns.
• Serves as Snow Duty Officer (SDO) monitoring winter conditions 24/7 and directing winter operations.
