The State of New Hampshire is hiring a Highway Maintainer III in District 1 to operate and service complex heavy equipment for year‑round highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. You will supervise entry‑level personnel and small crews, ensuring safety and quality across NH State Highway System.

This full‑time position requires a CDL‑A, the ability to lift 50 lbs, and readiness to respond 24/7, including winter plowing.

Qualifications

Equivalent combination of education and experience after high school.
Valid CDL-A with no air brake restrictions.
MVR must meet minimum standards by NH DOT.
Must obtain CDL medical card unless already state employee.
Negative pre-employment drug screen per CFR/DOT.
Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
Must be available 24 hours per day.

Responsibilities

Operates and troubleshoots complex highway maintenance equipment, including snow/ice removal and broad maintenance tasks.
Maintains equipment and performs field repairs; reports issues to supervisor.
Assists in winter conditions with appropriate action for plowing and abrasive/chemical spreading.

Earn up to a $5000 Winter Maintenance Incentive

Full-time vacancy for a Highway Maintainer III.

Summary

Performs skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and for emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.

Key Responsibilities

Operates and troubleshoots complex highway maintenance/construction equipment, machinery, and/or vehicle components used in the construction and maintenance of the State Highway System; to include snow and ice removal and flood mitigation, road surface seasonal treatment operations, and for a wide range of road and highway maintenance projects and activities.
Maintains assigned equipment and performs necessary field adjustments, emergency repairs and troubleshooting in order to maintain serviceability and optimal equipment operations, reports issues and concerns to supervisor when appropriate.
Observes winter storm road conditions and independently determines appropriate action for plowing and spreading of abrasives and/or chemicals for mitigation of specific weather, traffic and/or geographic conditions based on Department safety and environmental policies; provides training and supervision to entry‑level personnel assisting in road condition efforts.
Supervises, trains and reviews the work of small crews, entry level workers, and contractors to ensure maintenance work methods, safety and environmental practices are being implemented in accordance with Department policy and with best management practices, while performing similar work.
Supervises the work of others and performs routine highway and roads maintenance activities under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and during disaster situations, to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
Traverses varying terrain and performs tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/repair; this includes the ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
Must respond immediately in performing winter maintenance and/or other traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24‑hour per day basis, throughout the entire year.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school.
Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL‑A), with no air brake restrictions.
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation.
Offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.
Receive a negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.
Ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis.
Possession of a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in the operation of motorized highway equipment.
