Job summary

HDR, Inc. in Pittsburgh seeks a highway design engineer to contribute as a key member of a roadway team on moderate to large projects, with independence on smaller efforts.

You will prepare or oversee design work per local/AASHTO standards, coordinate with clients and subconsultants, manage scopes/budgets/schedules, and mentor junior staff to keep projects on schedule. This role requires a PE license, a bachelor's degree, and hands-on experience with major CAD tools such as Bentley

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required and PE license preferred.

• Strong CAD skills with major design software.

Primary Responsibilities

• Work as a key member of a highway/roadway design team for moderate to large projects, and to work independently on smaller projects.
• Prepare or oversee roadway/highway design work using local or AASHTO standards: horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway sections, intersection layouts, sight distance determinations, interchange layouts, right‑of‑way plans.
• Assist in the management of larger projects or manage smaller projects, including preparation of scopes, budgets, and schedules.
• Manage day‑to‑day communication (verbal and written) with design team and client; support and advise junior engineers and technical staff; write reports and technical memos; coordinate with subconsultants; keep projects on schedule and within budget; keep client satisfied.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree.
• Previous experience in all aspects of roadway engineering design.
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
• Hands‑on experience with Highways and Roads CAD engineering software such as Bentley ConceptStation and Open Roads Designer and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3d.
• MS Office knowledge.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Experience should include: urban and rural highway interchanges, intersection design, traffic management, transportation planning, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometrical layout and CAD base alignment plans.

Preferred Qualifications

• BSCE or related field.
• 5 years of transportation engineering design experience.
• Experience working on PennDOT / PTC projects.
• Experience working on Design‑Build projects a plus.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work concurrently with multiple design teams; leadership and management skills.
• Preference given to local candidates.
