This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants to fill current AND future vacancies as they occur at the Oahu District, Highways Division, State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation (DOT).

Positions and salary ranges:

  1. Highway Construction Inspector I: $4,537 to $4,798 per month (SR-12, Step C to I).
  2. Highway Construction Inspector II: $4,931 to $5,204 per month (SR-14, Step C to I).
  3. Highway Construction Inspector III: $5,603 to $5,997 per month (SR-17, Step C to I).
  4. Highway Construction Inspector IV: $6,090 to $6,519 per month (SR-19, Step C to I).

Salaries include Shortage Category Differential

Note: Hiring rates will be based on the availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

The Department of Human Resources Development - State Recruiting Office will refer all inquiries regarding this recruitment to the DOT Personnel Office.

The Highway Construction Inspector I inspects a particular phase of highway construction to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, and standards, and performs related duties.

The Highway Construction Inspector II inspects various phases of highway construction, resolving issues based on precedents or instructions, referring only complex or beyond-scope problems to supervisors.

The Highway Construction Inspector III inspects all phases of highway construction independently for conformance with plans and specifications.

The Highway Construction Inspector IV supervises and participates in inspecting all phases of highway construction, may train and supervise lower-level inspectors, and performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Legal Authorization to Work: Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident alien, or eligible for unrestricted employment under federal law.
  • Basic Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, or work experience demonstrating knowledge of English, arithmetic, reading and understanding instructions, and writing skills.
  • General Experience: One (1) year of experience in a construction trade or performing technical, non-professional engineering tasks involving inspection, comparable to the State of Hawaii Engineering Aid III level.
  • Specialized Experience: For higher levels, progressively responsible inspection experience in highway construction, with specific durations required for each level (II=1 year, III=2 years, IV=3 years).
  • Driver's License: Valid license to drive in Hawaii at the time of appointment.
