Job summary

Kalamazoo Public Schools in Kalamazoo, MI, seeks a High School Multilingual Language (ML) Teacher to support students whose primary language is not English. This 10-month, full-time role is governed by the KEA salary schedule and grade, with a salary range of $47,599–$93,010.

Required are a four-year degree, valid Michigan ESL certificate (NS), and the ability to be Highly Qualified in the content area. Strong communication skills and experience with diverse populations are valued.

Qualifications

• Four-year degree from an accredited teacher preparation program.
• Valid Michigan certificate with English as a Second Language (NS).
• Must be Highly Qualified in the content area.
• Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication.
• Experience with non-English speaking populations.
• Minimum three years of successful experience working with children and families in an urban educational setting and/or diverse/multi-cultural setting.
• Successful classroom teaching experience.

Responsibilities

• Teaches District approved curriculum.
• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
• Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
• Prepares for all classes assigned.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media specific to ESL students.
• Assists the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and maintains order in the classroom.
• Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, keeps appropriate records, and provides progress reports as required.
• Identifies students struggling academically or behaviorally to the child study team and seeks assistance as required.
• Available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
• Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
• Establishes and maintains reasonable standards and procedures for pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.

Performance Responsibilities

1. Teaches District approved curriculum.
2. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
4. Prepares for all classes assigned.

8. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, keeps appropriate records, and provides progress reports as required.
9. Identifies students struggling academically or behaviorally to the child study team, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required if a disability is suspected.
10. Available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.

Minimum Qualifications
