The Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center (BCAMSC) is a consortium high school program that provides students with accelerated, college-level learning opportunities beyond the traditional high school experience. In a dynamic, state‑of‑the‑art instructional environment, students gain access to advanced coursework, specialized equipment, and hands‑on learning designed to prepare them for college success and future careers. Graduates leave with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to confidently pursue their chosen fields.

Position Responsibilities:

• Plan and deliver rigorous, accelerated mathematics instruction across the BCAMSC course sequence, potentially including courses from Algebra I through calculus, based on program needs and teacher qualifications.
• Design learning experiences that emphasize conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, proof, modeling, problem‑solving, productive struggle, and clear communication of mathematical thinking.
• Maintain the depth, pace, and level of rigor expected in an advanced, college‑preparatory mathematics program while providing appropriate scaffolds and extensions based on individual student needs.
• Establish clear learning objectives and align daily instruction, units, projects, assessments, and learning experiences with the BCAMSC mathematics curriculum and program outcomes.
• Use formative assessments, common assessments, student work, and other evidence of learning to monitor progress, adjust instruction, provide timely feedback, and identify needs for intervention or enrichment.
• Differentiate instruction for advanced learners with varying levels of preparation, confidence, learning needs, and prior access to accelerated mathematics.
• Create an inclusive classroom culture that promotes curiosity, intellectual risk‑taking, perseverance, collaboration, belonging, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
• Integrate appropriate mathematical technologies, digital tools, data analysis, coding, visualization, and other resources that deepen student understanding and prepare students for advanced STEM study.
• Develop interdisciplinary learning experiences that connect mathematics to science, engineering, technology, research, and authentic problems.
• Prepare students for relevant course assessments, external assessments, advanced coursework, and postsecondary mathematics and STEM pathways.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with students, families, counselors, and appropriate staff from students' home districts regarding academic progress, concerns, support needs, and student success.
• Provide structured academic support, extension opportunities, and guidance to help students successfully navigate the demands of an accelerated learning environment.
• Participate fully in mathematics department meetings, professional learning communities, curriculum development, common assessment work, and collaborative review of student learning.
• Collaborate with BCAMSC colleagues to maintain a coherent four‑year mathematics experience and consistent expectations across courses.
• Participate in Center‑wide applied learning, enrichment, seminar, advisory, outreach, competition, and student‑experience activities as assigned.
• Maintain a safe, organized, respectful, and academically focused learning environment and appropriately supervise students, instructional materials, technology, and equipment.
• Engage in ongoing professional learning and continually strengthen content knowledge, instructional practice, assessment practices, and support for advanced learners.
• Carry out other responsibilities consistent with BCPS expectations and the mission and instructional priorities of BCAMSC.

Qualifications:

• Valid Michigan Department of Education teacher certification with a 6-12 Mathematics (EX) endorsement.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Deep knowledge of secondary mathematics and the mathematical concepts, practices, and connections necessary to teach an accelerated sequence extending through calculus.
• Ability to teach for conceptual understanding rather than relying primarily on procedural instruction or memorization.
• Skill in facilitating mathematical inquiry, modeling, proof, problem‑solving, academic discourse, and multiple approaches to complex problems.
• Knowledge of effective instructional practices for advanced and accelerated learners, including appropriate differentiation, enrichment, compacting, pacing, and scaffolding.
• Ability to maintain high levels of rigor while responding effectively to differences in students' prior preparation, confidence, and learning needs.
• Understanding of the academic and social‑emotional needs of advanced learners, including perfectionism, academic stress, fear of failure, and feelings of not belonging.
