High School Career Coaches are often the first Avenue Scholars staff members our Scholars get to know. Based at one partner high school, you’ll recruit students during their sophomore year, then coach that group of Scholars through their junior and senior years. The work combines classroom instruction using the Avenue Scholars curriculum, one-on-one coaching on personal, academic, and career goals, and regular coordination with families, school staff, and employers.
Your job is to help each Scholar choose a career pathway in healthcare, skilled trades, transportation, or education, build the skills and confidence to pursue it, and graduate ready for the next step in their training and career. You’ll split your time between your partner school and the Avenue Scholars office, working alongside our Business Outreach and Career Services teams. Every Scholar who leaves high school prepared and supported, strengthens Omaha’s workforce and community.
Recruits each year’s new class of around 30 Scholars at your assigned partner high school, building relationships with sophomores and school counseling staff to identify students who are a strong fit for the program.
Teaches the Avenue Scholars curriculum and leads engaging, hands‑on lessons, encouraging Scholars to take part in experiences hosted by the Business Outreach Team, so they build the skills and confidence to reach their goals.
Coaches Scholars one-on-one and monitors each Scholar’s grades, attendance, and well‑being, working with families, teachers, and employers so concerns are caught and addressed early.
Plans and leads summer activities that keep Scholars connected and motivated between school years and stays in regular contact with Scholars and their employers.
Builds strong working relationships with partner‑school staff and administrators, drawing on their expertise to improve programming and support every Scholar’s success.
Connects Scholars with internal teams, community partners, and local resources to address individual barriers to success in school and work.
Uses Avenue Scholars’ communication and data tools (including Salesforce, Zoom, and Canvas) to stay in contact with Scholars, deliver programming, and record and monitor progress.
Takes on other projects and duties as needed, always putting Scholars first.
Your Scholars stay engaged and on track because they can count on you for wrap‑around support, both inside and outside the classroom.
You work effectively across two settings: You are a visible, engaged presence at the Avenue
Scholars office and have strong relationships throughout your partner‑high school.
Your Scholar data is complete, accurate, and submitted on time, because you understand that program decisions and reporting depend on it.
You meet annual Scholar recruitment goals by advocating for Avenue Scholars with enthusiasm and enrolling students who are a strong fit.
You share program updates and raise concerns or barriers early, clearly, and professionally with Scholars, families, school staff, partners, and Avenue Scholars leadership.
