Job Description

DESCRIPTION: The Hampshire Regional High School Food Service Manager provides nutritious, appealing meals for students, is an advocate for encouraging students to make healthy meal choices, supports the school breakfast program and works to diminish obstacles to student participation in it, pursues maximum registration and participation of students who may be eligible for free or reduced meals, operates a fiscally independent food service program and creates and maintains a positive and productive work environment.

SUPERVISION: Works under the supervision of the Principal, Assistant Principals, and Business Manager.

Evaluated by the Principal or designee.

JOB ENVIRONMENT: Typical school cafeteria setting; may include driving to and from schools to provide support to other Food Service Personnel within the District.

Performance Responsibilities

Food Preparation Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of menu planning in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Develop a planned menu and inform students, staff and parents about the schools menu.
  • Oversee the preparation of breakfasts and lunches to ensure that the finished product is of best quality in both flavor and appearance.
  • Oversee the preparation of the breakfast and lunch menus to be sure they meet federal guidelines.
  • Supervise and plan the preparation of any and all special meals, or foods, served at the school.
  • Standardize portion sizes in accordance with guidelines regarding the age of those being served.
  • Inspect school lunch facilities and operations to ensure that standards of diet, cleanliness, health, and safety are being maintained.
  • Recommend and request repair or replacement of existing kitchen equipment.
  • Use government commodities as part of the ongoing food service program.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Prepare and administer the overall food services budget.
  • Standardize cafeteria accounting procedures, in cooperation with the Hampshire Regional District Treasurer.
  • Standardize prices charged for varying types of meals, snacks and milk.
  • Prepare specifications for bids in accordance with School Committee policy.
  • Maintain records of food received, an inventory of stores, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain records of all meals and milk distributed.
  • Apply for federal school lunch subsidies for free and reduced breakfast and lunch meals served.
  • Obtain government surplus food for cafeteria use.
  • Purchase food for the breakfast program through regular food service suppliers.
  • Review and verify all government reimbursements.
  • Check food shipments received and authorize invoices for payment.
  • Oversee daily accounting of lunch receipts and deposit of funds received.
  • Provide for the proper maintenance of all food service facilities and equipment and work closely with the Principal, Head Custodian, and Business Manager regarding all contracts and bids related to the repair and maintenance of food service facilities and equipment as needed. Also, to immediately report serious damage to or malfunction of food service facilities and equipment to the Principal or Business Manager.
Personnel Expectations
  • Supervise and evaluate all food service staff.
  • Supervise the food service personnel payroll.
  • Plan employee work schedules and arrange for substitutes as needed.
  • Instruct new and continuing employees regarding safety, cleanliness, and job responsibilities.
  • Meet with the Wellness Club students and advisor/Nurse Leader and school nurse to listen to ideas regarding health recommendations as requested
  • Interview and recommend all food service staff for appointment, as well as to oversee the assignment of substitute food service workers as needed.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Previous experience and skill in creative meal planning and food preparation.
  • Certification in “Serve Safe” sanitation standards.
  • Financial skills necessary
  • Complete First Aid and CPR training preferred
  • Such comparable alternatives to the above qualifications as the Principal may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
  • Good general health.
  • Alert, physically assertive and mobile at all times.
  • Lift, push, or pull 50 pounds as required;
  • Mobility to regularly walk, stand, stoop, reach, bend and occasionally run.
Terms of Employment

Annual salary

School year position-all days when school is in session and meals are served, may be extended into the summer for preparation and major periodic cleaning of the kitchen area and for the preparation of annual financial reports to be approved annually
