General Definition Of Work

This position functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in the high school. It works with individuals engaged in physical activity to prevent injuries and illnesses, recognize, evaluate, and provide immediate care, facilitate rehabilitation and reconditioning, and administer the program. The role supports student‑athletes’ ability to participate in practices and competition following a sports‑related injury. It also coordinates and completes all administrative functions supporting injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning, and communicates with school administrators, coaches, and parents regarding participation status. The position assists in developing formal educational or instructional material related to athletic training or sports medicine for high school athletes and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Attends athletic games and practices.
  • Provides and applies medical protective gear and prophylactic devices.
  • Advises athletes on proper use of equipment.
  • Provides education on athletic injuries, conditions, and nutrition for performance.
  • Conducts on-field assessment of acute injuries; provides immediate care and assists in management of chronic conditions.
  • Applies appropriate modalities to treat sports injuries and acute first aid for all injuries and conditions.
  • Collects correspondence with treating physician; routinely communicates with parents or guardians, coaches, and treating therapists or physicians.
  • Refers athletes for specialized care; documents all daily treatments, injuries, and referrals.
  • Coordinates outside care and treatments and supervises athletes’ return to activity.
  • Assesses emergency conditions and recognizes general medical conditions.
  • Coordinates/activates emergency medical care.
  • Provides instruction on rehabilitation exercises and methods of maintaining overall body conditioning while injured.
  • Maintains the Athletic Training Room and inventory of supplies and resources.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism at all times to positively impact the community.
  • Complies with confidentiality and disclosure requirements.
  • Complies with all local, state, and federal rules, requirements, regulations, and laws related to Athletic Training.
  • Reports any suspected or known violation of a rule, requirement, or law to proper authorities.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff; knowledge of child development and stages of growth; lesson planning ability; strong organizational and behavior management skills; supervisory skills; punctuality and dependability; excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of student instruction and management practices; knowledge of school system rules and procedures; ability to guide, direct, teach, and control students; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; basic typing skills; operation of audio‑visual equipment; thorough knowledge of diagnosing and treating athletic injuries to muscles and bones; collaboration with physicians and other medical professionals to provide preventative care, emergency response, and rehabilitative care for athletes; ability to attend home athletic contests and practices and other post‑season events as directed by the Athletic Director.

Education And Experience

Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university, preferably in Athletic Training or a related field.

Must hold or be eligible for licensure as an athletic trainer in the State of Virginia. BOC Certified.

Two years of athletic training experience preferred, but not required.

Physical Conditions And Nature Of Work Contacts

Duties performed typically in school settings including classroom, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, and light lifting to 40 pounds, with occasional travel on field trips and movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices. Regular instruction diversified for students with varying learning needs (special education, English Language Learners, Gifted). Daily personal and close contact with children, regular contact with other staff and families, and occasional contact with medical professionals. Frequent contact with families by phone and in person.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated on ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
