Job summary

Norfolk Public Schools, Nebraska seeks a High Needs LIFE Paraprofessional with driving to support Special Education in a Senior High setting. This 9-month, 35-hour/week role involves assisting the teacher, preparing instructional materials, and supervising students on buses and at school.

Requirements include a high school diploma; a valid driver's license and good driving record; DOT physical; First aid/CPR certificate desired; and strong communication, organizational and classroom support

• Assists teacher in checking progress of individualized study projects.
• Supervises lunchroom, playground, halls, classrooms and other activities.
• Keeps assigned bus clean and ensures safety checks; reports accidents.
• Transports only authorized students and follows all traffic and safety regulations.
• Performs other delegated non-instructional responsibilities assigned by teacher or administrator.

JOB GOAL:

Assist the teacher in providing education and instruction to students

Essential Functions

• Prepares bulletin boards, charts, and graphs


• Assists with the physical and health needs of students, such as feeding and toileting


• Assists with augmentative communication/electronic devices, and be willing to be trained for use


• Checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects and notifies the proper authorities in the case of mechanical failure


• Follows guidelines for loading/unloading students


• Transports only authorized students


• Obeys all traffic laws; observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses


• Keeps to assigned schedule


• Maintains discipline when students are on the bus/van and reports undisciplined students to the proper authority


• Discharges students only at authorized stops


• Keeps assigned bus clean


• Reports all accidents and advises about all possible safety problems


• Transfers and positions students with physical disabilities


• Does miscellaneous typing and filing


• Inventories books, materials and equipment


• Assists when emergencies arise


• Performs other delegated non-instructional responsibilities assigned by teacher or administrator
