Community Automotive Repair in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking an Automotive Master Certified Technician to diagnose vehicle issues, perform repairs and routine maintenance using advanced diagnostic tools, in a fast-paced on-site shop environment. You will collaborate with fellow technicians, share knowledge, and maintain high standards of quality.

What Does Your Day Look Like?

As a new Automotive Master Certified Technician at Community Automotive Repair, you can expect a fast-paced and rewarding work environment. Each day typically starts at 7:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Your primary responsibilities will include diagnosing vehicle issues, conducting repairs, and perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal performance. You will collaborate with fellow technicians to share knowledge and techniques, fostering a supportive atmosphere. Be prepared to utilize advanced diagnostic tools and engage in hands‑on work with various automotive systems. Attention to detail and effective communication with customers about repair needs will be essential. Your dedication and expertise will directly contribute to our commitment to quality in the auto repair industry.

What we’re looking for in an Automotive Master Certified Technician

An A-Level Master Certified Automotive Technician represents the pinnacle of diagnostic and repair expertise in the automotive service industry. They possess a deep combination of advanced technical mastery, analytical problem‑solving skills, and efficiency.

Knowledge and Skills Required for the Position: 5+ years of experience as an automotive repair technician. Typically certified as an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Master Technician (passing tests A1 through A8), their comprehensive skillset spans the following core areas:

1. Advanced Diagnostics & Electrical Systems

• Complex Electrical Troubleshooting: Ability to read intricate wiring diagrams, schematics, and use advanced diagnostic tools (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic probes) to isolate intermittent electrical faults, network issues (CAN bus, LIN bus), and parasitic draws.
• Computerized Engine Controls: Mastery of powertrain control modules (PCM/ECM), scan tool data stream analysis, sensor/actuator testing, and reprogramming/flashing vehicle control modules.

2. Mechanical Systems Mastery

• Engine Repair (A1): Diagnosing and rebuilding complex internal combustion engines, including timing chains/belts, valve trains, and cylinder heads.
• Drivetrain & Transmission (A2 & A3): Diagnosing, pulling, tearing down, repairing, and rebuilding both automatic and manual transmissions, transaxles, differentials, and transfer cases.
• Suspension, Steering, & Brakes (A4 & A5): Diagnosing advanced ride control systems, electronic steering, stability control systems, anti‑lock braking systems (ABS), and executing precise 4‑wheel alignments.

3. Climate Control & Engine Performance

• HVAC Systems (A7): Complete diagnosis and repair of modern climate control systems, including dual‑zone automatic climate control, compressor replacements, and working with both R-134a and R-1234yf refrigerants.
• Engine Performance & Drivability (A8): Pinpointing drivability issues like misfires, fuel trim errors, emissions failures, and advanced forced‑induction (turbo/supercharger) issues.

4. Next-Gen & Specialized Skillsets

• EV & Hybrid Vehicles: Safe handling of high‑voltage systems, battery pack diagnostics, inverter repairs, and electric motor service.
• Import/European Vehicle Specialization: Deeper familiarity with European engineering nuances (BMW, Mercedes‑Benz, Audi/VW), specialized factory scan tools, and specific fluid/part tolerances.

5. Shop Leadership & Efficiency (A-Level Qualities)

• High Production ("Booking Hours"): Consistently beating flat‑rate guide times, often producing 50-60 booking hours in a standard 40‑hour workweek due to speed and accuracy.
• Low Comeback Rate: Getting the diagnosis right the first time, preventing costly re‑checks or unsatisfied customers.
• Mentorship & Leadership: Acting as a technical resource for B- and C-level technicians, guiding shop workflow, and keeping up with ongoing automotive tech evolution.
