Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is representing a small progressive dairy operation located in Rhode Island that is seeking an experienced, hands on Herd Manager to oversee herd health, production, animal welfare, and daily dairy operations. This position will work closely with farm leadership while providing direction and supervision to the dairy team.
The Herd Manager will oversee herd health and reproduction programs, including daily cow observation, identifying and treating health concerns, heat detection, breeding programs, reproductive performance, and maintaining accurate herd records. This individual will work closely with the veterinarian and nutritionist to optimize animal health, nutrition, milk production, and overall herd performance.
Responsibilities also include overseeing milking, dry cows, maternity, calves, and youngstock; monitoring milk quality; managing veterinary and herd health inventory; and tracking production, reproduction, culling, and replacement performance. The Herd Manager will ensure established animal welfare, biosecurity, safety, and operational protocols are consistently followed.
This position will supervise, train, and develop employees while maintaining accountability for daily responsibilities and performance. Additional duties include supporting facility and equipment maintenance, operating farm equipment, assisting with feed management, and participating in seasonal crop activities as needed.
The ideal candidate will be a strong, hands on leader who enjoys working directly with cattle and employees and can use herd data to identify problems, improve performance, and continually strengthen the operation.
Qualifications
Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelors degree preferred in Animal Science, Dairy Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on dairy experience
  • 3+ years of progressive, hands-on dairy herd management or farm leadership experience
  • Strong knowledge of herd health, reproduction, nutrition, milk quality, and overall dairy production
  • Previous employee supervision, training, and leadership experience
  • Experience with dairy herd management software, recordkeeping, and production data
  • AI breeding experience or certification preferred
  • Ability to operate tractors, skid steers, and other farm equipment
  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Valid drivers license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays
