Job summary

Henry Ford Health in Jackson, MI, seeks a Nurse Extern to support basic patient care under supervision. You will assist the RN in planning and delivering care, responding to emergencies, and pursuing ongoing education. Applicants must be enrolled in a nursing program and have completed two clinical rotations, including Med/Surg.

The externship is time-limited with defined rotation durations. Ideal candidates are actively enrolled in a nursing program, prepared to provide transcripts and a plan

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or enrolled in Henry Ford Health Early College Program.
• Enrolled in an accredited nursing program with two clinical rotations completed.
• Two clinical rotations, including Med/Surg in acute care.
• Maintain active enrollment and provide transcripts/plan of work as required.
• Extern position is time-limited: ADN up to 12 months; BSN up to 24 months.

Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent OR currently enrolled in the Henry Ford Health Early College Program and meets the completion of two clinical rotations as required at an accredited school of nursing.
• Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.
• The completion of two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg (in an acute care setting).
• To remain in the extern role, you MUST:
  • Actively be enrolled in a nursing program Successfully complete each course.
  • Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each semester/term.
  • Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager.
  • If at any point the extern does not meet their academic institution's standard for continued enrollment in the school of nursing classes, their employment as an extern will be rescinded.
• Position is time limited
  • a. ADN: Maximum 12 months for ADN
  • b. BSN: Maximum 24 months for BSN (adjust for Part Time BSN programs).
• Successful completion of 180-day introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.
