Job summary

RIH Rhode Island Hospital is seeking a Pathology Technologist to perform complex clinical laboratory tests across multiple sections under supervision. Ideal candidates hold a bachelor's degree in a laboratory science and ASCP or equivalent certification, with at least one year of clinical lab experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a lab science such as chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology or closely related field.
• CREDENTIALS: National certification by ASCP or equivalent in any offered category; or eligible for national certification with ABHES/NAACLS training; or qualifying as a technologist under CLIA.
• Ability to operate equipment and instruments and perform procedures in assigned laboratory section.
• Physical and visual dexterity to conduct and interpret tests; ability to stand for long periods.
• Experience and skill to provide patient care considerations across aging and developmental stages.

Responsibilities

• Prepares solutions, reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures; may prepare variations for special tests.
• Performs complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections and monitors testing procedures and results.
• Type and cross-match blood and ensure compatibility between patient and donor.
• Identify unusual blood incompatibility factors and atypical conditions in blood specimens.
• Identify and quantify formed elements of blood and coagulation factors.
• Isolate microorganisms from clinical specimens and perform antibiotic susceptibility tests.
• Perform chemical analyses of body fluids to determine levels of glucose, electrolytes, drugs and alcohol.
• Record and review test results and relay to physicians.
• Assist in instruction of students and orientation of new employees; participate in training.
• Perform quality control checks on equipment and reagents and calibrate/maintain equipment.
