Job summary

City of Indianapolis is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic responsible for maintaining the City's heavy machinery and attachments used in operating activities. The role requires diagnosing wear and malfunctions, dismantling components, and reassembling systems with tools such as grinders and welding torches.

A CDL Class B license is required or obtained within 180 days. Experience with diesel engines, electrical/hydraulic systems, and reading manuals is essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must have a valid CDL operator's license with a Class B endorsement or obtain one within 180 days.
• Working knowledge of diesel engines and related test analysis.
• Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical air systems for diesel engines.
• Ability to read and understand manuals and instructions.
• Ability to operate and test all equipment the incumbent repairs.
• Ability to repair and service rolling stock owned by the City.
• Must have hand tools for this repair work.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as pulling, reaching, pushing, standing, kneeling, and more.
• Ability for rapid mental coordination.

Responsibilities

• Examines equipment and attachments for wear, breakage, and malfunctions on heavy assemblies.
• Uses testing equipment to localize failures.
• Dismantles power transmission units and related components to identify required parts.
• Inspects gears and moving parts for adjustment or repair needs.
• Removes engines or defective parts for service.
• Reconditions and assembles clutch, steering, final drive, and hydraulic systems.
• Utilizes grinders, drills and welding torches for maintenance tasks.
• Operates and tests equipment to verify fixes.
• Interprets manuals and lube orders and other data for maintenance.
• Demonstrates inspection and testing procedures to subordinates.
• Performs final inspections.
