POSITION SUMMARY: The Heavy Equipment Technician performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment, compact heavy equipment, light service equipment, and light trucks. Typical repairs include preventative maintenance inspections, hydraulic, fuel, exhaust, brakes, suspension, electrical, HVAC, and emission systems.
Principal Responsibilities
- Maintain advanced knowledge to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment.
- Perform repair or preventative maintenance on electrical, diesel, and gasoline vehicles, including compactors, excavators, wheel loaders, and other vehicles to ensure safe and productive operations. Work includes engines, transmissions, chassis, drivelines, hydraulic, brake, electrical, suspension systems, wheels, tires, and undercarriages.
- Read and interpret equipment condition reports and repair orders, communicate with supervisors and operators for clarification, and discuss preventive techniques to minimize future repairs.
- Complete paperwork related to repairs, parts usage, and time tracking.
- Record hours, fuel, and oil usage in daily reports and input data into Fleet Management Software.
- Analyze data from oil sampling, onboard computers, and fleet management systems.
- Follow all safety policies and procedures.
- Perform overhauls on gas or diesel engines.
Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge in air brakes, tires, hydraulics, electrical systems, drive trains, suspension, steering, and wheel-end components, evidenced by ASE Certification.
- At least 1 year of experience working on heavy equipment.
- Mechanical Trade School certificate or degree.
- Electrical diagnostics certification.
- Applicable ASE certifications.
- Knowledge of Tier 4 emission systems.
- Welding and fabrication skills or experience.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a technician role requiring OSHA HazCom, Lock Out Tag Out, and Fire Protection regulations.
