Job summary

  • Assist with special events and hazardous waste handling
  • Monitor preventative maintenance and report needs
  • Collaborate with coworkers and other departments
  • Attend training and perform other duties as assigned

Job description

Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating heavy equipment in the collection of waste and recyclables from collection centers, performing equipment inspection and minor repairs, and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Solid Waste & Recycling Transportation Supervisor.The following essential functions serve as a general guide for this position. Position functions are subject to change based on departmental needs and external factors including, but not limited to, regulatory requirements.

  • Drive and operate roll off truck, box truck with lift gate, and department specific vehicles.
  • Collects and transports waste and recyclables to appropriate facilities.
  • Perform inspections, make minor repairs and maintain assigned equipment, grease and wash equipment.
  • Maintains records of materials hauled, collection location, destination and weight, maintains records of mileage and fuel consumption and maintains reports on the quantity of materials at each center.
  • Reviews reports and plans daily work assignments and reviews accuracy of weight tickets from recycling markets and transfer stations.
  • Operates heavy equipment including a dozer, skid steer, front-end loader, tractor and related equipment in the operation and maintenance of the department's facilities.
  • Operates stationary equipment such as compactors and pre-crushers at the collection centers.
  • Collects waste and recyclables from special community events; prepares household hazardous waste facility for events.
  • Monitors preventative maintenance of assigned equipment, reports maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Assists co-workers and other departments as necessary.
  • Attend training as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience operating heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and general servicing of heavy equipment;
  • General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
  • General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment;
  • General knowledge and ability to identify and handle infectious and hazardous waste properly;
  • Skill and care in the operation of several types of construction equipment;
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment fitted with automatic transmission;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude;
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members and the public.
Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing and using hands to finger, handling or feeling, frequently requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid NorthCarolina Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Employment is conditional upon successful clearance of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Clearinghouse.
