Chatham County of NC is seeking a mid-level Heavy Equipment Operator to perform semiskilled work operating heavy equipment for waste collection and recycling services. The role includes inspections, minor repairs, and maintaining vehicle records while working under supervision of the Solid Waste & Recycling Transportation Supervisor.
Responsibilities include operating various trucks and heavy machinery, collecting waste, monitoring maintenance, and collaborating with coworkers.
Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating heavy equipment in the collection of waste and recyclables from collection centers, performing equipment inspection and minor repairs, and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Solid Waste & Recycling Transportation Supervisor.The following essential functions serve as a general guide for this position. High school diploma or GED and moderate experience operating heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing and using hands to finger, handling or feeling, frequently requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
