An established industry player is seeking a dedicated Heavy Equipment Operator to join their Public Works team in a dynamic and challenging environment. This role involves operating various heavy equipment, performing road maintenance, and ensuring safety standards are met. Operates heavy equipment and tandem plow trucks to complete tasks within the Public Works department and assigned division.
Operates heavy equipment including loader, snowplow, excavator, and haul truck.
Performs general road and grounds maintenance, snow removal, loads trucks with soils and aggregates, and operates various equipment.
Works with the line crew in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting materials, and performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment; cleans equipment; assists with traffic control device installation and maintenance; plows snow and salts roads following departmental policies; adheres to safety standards.
Ability to work around and excavate near utilities such as Gas, Electric, Water, and Sewer.
When assigned to Solid Waste, assists in compost operations, waste processing, manages scrap metal and tire piles, and maintains the Solid Waste Center.
Utilizes knowledge of Trimble 3D mapping systems while operating equipment when assigned to Solid Waste.
Performs general administrative duties, including email correspondence, meetings, and training participation.
May act as a first responder in emergency situations.
Supports public relations by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior with citizens, visitors, and staff; maintains confidentiality; performs other duties as required.
This position follows a sequence based on experience and certifications:
Level I:
Up to 1 year of equipment operating experience.
Completion of 24-hour HAZWOPER and SWANA waste screening courses within one year of hire.
High school diploma or GED; Associate’s Degree preferred.
Valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Level II (in addition to Level I):
1-3 years of heavy equipment operation experience, proficiency in loader and compactor.
Completion of SWANA Manager of Landfill Operations certification.
E-waste handling training.
Level III (in addition to Level II):
Over 3 years of heavy equipment operation, proficiency in excavator, dozer, trommel screen, and grinder.
Class B CDL with tanker endorsement.
Completion of Trimble GPS operations course.
Knowledge of:
Safety policies, procedures, and practices for construction standards.
Inventory management.
Personal protective equipment and usage.
Equipment troubleshooting.
General maintenance practices.
Skills in:
Organizing and prioritizing work.
Handling multiple tasks under pressure.
Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Effective communication.
Establishing effective working relationships.
Work Environment:
Performed throughout Pitkin County, exposing workers to potentially dangerous equipment, weather, and hazardous substances.
Work near active traffic.
