Job summary

The City of Greensboro is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator (Residential) to support residential collection operations. You will operate automated collection vehicles and assist with yard waste and bulk item collection, playing a key role in keeping Greensboro neighborhoods clean and ensuring reliable waste collection services.

The role requires a Class A or B CDL, defensive driving certification, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather, with a schedule Monday-Friday plus potential

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required with 1+ years of experience operating CDL-related vehicles.
• Alternate pathway: no diploma with 4+ years of experience operating CDL-related vehicles.
• Class A or B Commercial Driver's License required.
• Defensive Driving Certification (Smith System) within six months of hire; forklift license if operating a forklift.

About the Role

AsaHeavyEquipmentOperatorassignedtotheResidentialsection,you’llprimarilyoperateautomatedcollectionvehiclesandknuckleboomcollectionvehiclestoprovideresidentialsolidwastecollectionservices.Thispositionrequirestheabilitytocompletedailycollectionassignments,navigateCitystreetsindependently,andworkcollaborativelywithothercrewstomeetoperationalneeds.

Key responsibilities include

• Operatingautomatedcollectionvehicleswithanexpecteddailycollectionofapproximately1,000automatedcontainers.
• Operating knuckle-boom collection vehicles and assisting with other residential collection assignments as needed.
• Supportingrear-loadercollectionoperationsinvolvingyardwasteandbulkitems.
• IndependentlylocatingcollectionroutesandserviceaddressesusingstreetguidesandCitymaps.
• Usingtwo-wayradiostocommunicatewithsupervisors,coworkers,andotheroperationalpersonnel.
• Completingdailysurveyforms,vehicleinspectionforms,andotherrequireddocumentation.
• Work closely with Solid Waste supervisors and assist other crews as operational needs require.
• Performingassigneddutiesindependentlyunderlimitedsupervisionwhilemaintainingproductivityandserviceexpectations.
• Supportingemergencyoperations,includingsnowresponse,tornadorecovery,andotherweather-relatedemergencies,sometimeswithlittleornoadvancenotice.

Theworkisperformedoutdoorsinallweatherconditionsandinvolvesfrequentphysicalactivity,includingstanding,stooping,bending,kneeling,walking,prolongedsitting,climbing,shoveling,andconsistentlyliftingupto50pounds.Employeesmustalsomaintainhand-eyecoordinationandthephysicalabilitytosafelyperformassignedduties.

Flexibleschedulingmayberequired,includingweekendsandholidays,withlittleornoadvancenotice.Employeesmustmaintainareliablemeansofcontactforemergencysituationsandcall-backduties.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma/GED with 1+ years of experience operating CDL-related vehicles
• Or No High School diploma/GED with 4+ years of experience operating CDL-related vehicles
• Class A or B Commercial Driver's License
• Must successfully complete Smith System Defensive Driving Certification within six months of hire date; If operating a forklift, Forklift Operator's License

Preferred Qualifications

• Solid Waste industry experience preferred.
