Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Paving Equipment Operator is a skilled role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of intermediate to advanced paving machinery. This individual works as part of a high-production paving crew to install asphalt or concrete on highways, parking lots, and specialized infrastructure projects. The Paving Equipment Operator II is expected to possess a high degree of technical proficiency, assisting with grade control, material flow regulation, and the training of junior crew members. This role is central to maintaining Martin Marietta’s 'Guardian Angel' safety culture while meeting strict quality and production deadlines.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate complex paving machinery including, but not limited to, asphalt pavers, large steel-drum rollers, pneumatic rollers, and milling machines.
  • Regulate screed temperatures, asphalt flow rates, and hopper levels to ensure a seamless and uniform mat.
  • Utilize automated grade and slope controls to meet project specifications and ensure proper drainage.
  • Execute specific rolling patterns to achieve required density and smoothness, preventing 'bumping' or surface defects.
  • Conduct thorough daily inspections of fluid levels, hoses, tires/tracks, and safety devices, document findings in electronic or paper maintenance logs.
  • Perform routine minor maintenance such as greasing fittings, cleaning the screed, and applying release agents to prevent asphalt buildup.
  • Identify and report mechanical malfunctions or wear-and-tear to the Foreman immediately to prevent downtime.
  • Use hand signals or radio communication to guide dump trucks into the paver hopper, ensuring a constant and steady material supply.
  • Monitor the distribution of paving materials; identify and correct low spots or irregularities behind the paver.
  • Assist in the training and development of Operators and laborers on equipment safety and basic operation techniques.
  • Adhere to all Martin Marietta and OSHA safety regulations, including the consistent use of PPE (Hard hat, safety vest, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection).
  • Assist in the setup and maintenance of work zone traffic control devices (cones, barrels, signs) to ensure crew and public safety.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation and contribute to general jobsite 'housekeeping' tasks as needed.
