Qualifications

Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of various equipment and heavy machinery, including asphalt rollers, water trucks, dump trucks, ASL packers, street sweepers, roll-off, front load, and rear load refuse units in the Public Works Department.

Equipment Operator – Starting Salary:

• Hourly: $22.16

• Biweekly: $1,773.35

• Monthly: $3,842.25

• Annually: $46,107.05

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Operate a variety of heavy equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Perform scheduled maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, medians, storm water drainage systems, and retention basins when assigned to public works; haul, transport, load and unload materials and equipment related to assigned projects.
• Maintain dirt roads, shoulders, construct and maintain temporary parking lots; perform asphalt repair and replacement; excavate, sweep, dump, rake, spread, and roll/compact asphalt; perform all forms of concrete form setting, placement, and finishing related to street maintenance.
• When assigned to Solid Waste, collect waste from containers following assigned routes, operate heavy equipment to pick up containers, and dispose of debris and bulky items.
• Maintain heavy equipment through daily safety inspections, routine maintenance, and identify mechanical issues requiring repair; perform load inspections to prevent hazardous spills or dangerous road conditions.
• Assist with other routes, facility cleaning, container delivery, and customer service as needed.
• Complete daily logs and reports.
• Transport materials and vehicles to job sites.
• Load and unload materials using power equipment.
• Perform construction, maintenance, and labor work.
• Resurface, grade, and shape roads.
• Operate power equipment for trash and refuse collection.
• Assist in training and supervising new employees when required.
• Support emergency and storm-related activities.
• Perform overtime as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED, plus three years of experience driving trucks and operating equipment. Valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License Class A with tanker endorsement required.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License Class A with tanker endorsement; additional technical certifications may be required for specific tasks.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge of City policies, safety standards, traffic laws, and hazards related to heavy equipment operation.
• Skills in safe equipment operation, maintenance, communication, customer service, and handling difficult situations.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

Work is outdoors and in City facilities, often in high-traffic areas. The description is subject to change, and the City does not hire at the top of the salary range; starting salary may vary based on qualifications.
