City of Valdosta seeks a dedicated Grounds Maintenance Worker to operate trucks and light equipment for maintaining city rights-of-way, cemeteries, and other properties while transporting refuse.

You will mow grass, prune trees, and perform cemetery backhoe and dump truck tasks, along with tool use, safety, and basic math. Strong communication with dispatch is required.

Experience from an apprenticeship/internship or 1–2 years in a similar role is preferred. Valid driver’s license is expected.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of grounds and cemetery maintenance techniques.
• Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names.
• Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and light equipment.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Sufficient experience to understand principles relevant to duties usually associated with an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for 1–2 years.

• Operates a backhoe and dump truck to close and open graves in the cemetery.
• Maintains radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
• Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.

Requirements

• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
