Location: North Central United States, ideally Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, or surrounding region

Travel: Extensive, primarily Monday-Friday

Compensation: $95,000-$120,000 base salary, with flexibility based on experience

Position Overview

A large, established North American infrastructure and construction organization is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator Assessor & CDL Driver to support the U.S. expansion of its mobile training and operator competency program.

This is a unique field-based role combining heavy equipment expertise, operator competency assessment, coaching, and Class A commercial driving.

The successful candidate will transport a specialized Mobile Training Centre between construction projects and, once onsite, evaluate the competency of heavy equipment operators through simulator-based and hands‑on field assessments.

This position is ideal for an experienced heavy equipment operator, equipment trainer, operator evaluator, or construction foreman who understands what safe and competent equipment operation looks like in real‑world construction environments and enjoys coaching and developing others.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely transport a specialized Mobile Training Centre, including truck and trailer, between construction projects throughout the United States.


• Conduct hands‑on competency assessments of heavy equipment operators in active field environments.


• Evaluate operators using both simulator technology and practical equipment assessments.


• Observe equipment operation and determine whether individuals demonstrate the skills and safe operating practices required for the work.


• Identify competency gaps and provide practical coaching and feedback to operators.


• Work directly with field crews, project leadership, EHS professionals, trainers, and subject matter experts.


• Support equipment safety, operator development, and competency initiatives across multiple construction projects.


• Coordinate arrival, positioning, parking, setup, and movement of the Mobile Training Centre.


• Maintain appropriate operator assessment documentation and communicate findings to project and EHS leadership.


• Maintain a valid Class A CDL and meet applicable company and DOT driving requirements.

Equipment Experience

Candidates should have strong hands‑on knowledge across several types of construction equipment, including:

• Excavators


• Backhoes


• Skid steers


• Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs)

Broad equipment experience within civil construction, utilities, infrastructure, or heavy construction is highly desirable.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Class A CDL.


• Strong hands‑on heavy equipment operating experience.


• Experience with multiple types of construction equipment.


• Background within civil construction, utilities, infrastructure, heavy construction, or a related field environment.


• Strong understanding of safe equipment operation and construction site safety.


• Ability to recognize unsafe operating practices and equipment competency gaps.


• Ability to evaluate, coach, and provide constructive feedback to equipment operators.


• Commercial driving experience with the ability to safely operate a truck and trailer configuration.


• Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the United States.


• Ability to work a schedule that will typically involve travel Monday through Friday.


• Acceptable driving record and ability to meet applicable DOT and company requirements.


• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a heavy equipment operator assessor, evaluator, trainer, instructor, superintendent, or senior operator.


• Experience training, mentoring, qualifying, or evaluating other equipment operators.


• Formal operator competency assessment experience.


• Equipment‑specific instructor or trainer credentials.


• OSHA or other construction safety credentials.


• Experience using heavy equipment simulator technology.


• Experience working across multiple construction environments or project types.

A formal \"Operator Assessor\" title is not required. Senior operators, equipment foremen, trainers, and experienced field leaders who have been responsible for evaluating or developing other operators are encouraged to apply.

Travel & Schedule

This is a highly mobile position supporting construction projects throughout the United States.

Assignments will generally follow a Monday-Friday schedule, with training and assessment activities commonly taking place at one project location for approximately one week at a time.

Depending on the project location, the employee may return home each evening or stay near the project during the workweek. Weekend travel home will generally be possible based on the assignment schedule.

Approved business travel expenses, including lodging and meals, will be covered in accordance with company travel policies.

We're looking for someone who has actually operated heavy equipment in the field and can confidently evaluate whether another operator knows what they're doing.

This is not a traditional CDL driving position, nor is it a desk‑based safety role.

You'll travel directly to major construction projects, operate alongside field teams, assess heavy equipment operators, provide practical coaching, and help ensure crews have the skills necessary to perform their work safely.
