Job summary

Maricopa County’s Department of Transportation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join a team dedicated to maintaining roads and related structures. You will operate county equipment and vehicles to support construction and maintenance projects.

Requirements include three years of experience operating trucks and equipment, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid Arizona Class A CDL with tanker endorsement. Overtime eligibility applies where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of medium to large construction equipment in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Plan and prioritize work tasks; read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Perform pre- and post-checks, service, and maintenance on equipment/vehicles.
  • Identify and report mechanical problems requiring repair.
  • Complete daily logs and enter information in asset management system (Cartegraph).
  • Attend safety meetings and mandatory training.
  • Perform heavy manual labor and assist crews as needed.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $23.50 - $38.00 hourly

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

Requirements
  • Three years of experience operating trucks and equipment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • A valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement
  • State and federal regulations require Maricopa County to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for all positions that require an applicant to possess a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Maricopa County is also required to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for positions that directly impact commercial motor vehicle safety, but may not specifically require a valid CDL
  • We Also Value Experience transporting equipment along with operating/driving the following: motor grader, backhoe, frontend loader, distributor trucks, and various types of small equipment.
Job Contributions
  • Operate a variety of medium to large-sized construction and maintenance equipment/vehicles in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures
  • Plan and prioritize work tasks; read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications
  • Perform pre- and post-checks, clean, service, and minor maintenance repairs on equipment/vehicles
  • Identify and report mechanical problems requiring additional repair
  • Complete required daily logs and prepare reports; enter information in the asset management system (Cartegraph)
  • Attend safety meetings, other required meetings, and mandatory training
  • Perform heavy manual labor assignments as needed and assist with work for crews as required
  • Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and transporters
  • Other job duties as assigned
Working Conditions

Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly. Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration. Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
