The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating a variety of heavy equipment to support daily quarry operations at Ste. Genevieve Quarry. This role is essential to maintaining efficient production flow and includes operating mobile equipment, quarry saws, drills, and other machinery used in extraction and material handling. The ideal candidate brings strong equipment experience, sound judgment, and a safety-first mindset in a demanding outdoor work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Equipment Operation: Operate a wide range of heavy equipment used in quarry operations, including loaders, excavators, haul trucks, and other site-specific machinery.
- Specialized Quarry Equipment: Operate quarry saws, drills, and related equipment in support of extraction and production activities.
- Material Handling: Move raw material, stone, overburden, and other quarry materials safely and efficiently throughout the site.
- Production Support: Work closely with quarry leadership and team members to meet daily production goals and maintain workflow.
- Equipment Inspection: Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections to ensure equipment is operating properly and report any maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Safe Work Practices: Follow all company safety procedures, site rules, and operating protocols while maintaining a constant awareness of surroundings and equipment conditions.
- Site Maintenance: Assist with general quarry housekeeping, cleanup, and support tasks as needed to maintain a safe and productive work environment.
- Communication and Coordination: Coordinate with supervisors and coworkers regarding equipment needs, job priorities, and changing site conditions.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Prior experience operating heavy equipment in a quarry, mining, construction, or similar industrial environment required.
- Preferred Experience Level: 5-10 years of experience preferred.
- Equipment Knowledge: Experience operating multiple types of heavy equipment, including quarry-related machinery such as saws and drills.
- Safety Awareness: Strong commitment to workplace safety and the ability to operate equipment responsibly in an active quarry environment.
- Dependability: Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Communication: Ability to follow instructions, communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers, and adapt to changing production needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience specifically in quarry operations or similar aggregate, stone, or mining environments.
- Current or previous MSHA certification/training is strongly preferred
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to identify basic equipment maintenance needs.
- Familiarity with site safety standards, equipment inspections, and preventative maintenance practices.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- This position works primarily outdoors in an active quarry environment and is regularly exposed to dust, noise, vibration, uneven terrain, and changing weather conditions.
- Requires frequent climbing, standing, walking, bending, and sitting for extended periods while operating equipment.
- Must be able to work safely around moving equipment, production activity, and other heavy machinery.
- May require occasional lifting and other physical tasks consistent with quarry operations.
