Job Description
Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for safely operating various heavy equipment that perform the spreading and compaction of construction and demolition, and/or commercial and residential waste disposed of at the landfill or post collection facilities. Equipment operators are exposed to unpleasant odors and sights, and weather elements.
Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 7:00 am - 5:00 pm
Responsibilities of Position:
- Perform efficient and safe operation of bulldozers, graders, excavators, backhoes, front end loaders, wheel loaders, off-road dump trucks, and other equipment.
- Safely move material without endangering personnel or equipment.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment and complete necessary forms. Perform routine maintenance (e.g., lubricating, fueling, cleaning).
- Operate equipment for site preparation, landscaping, snow removal, and related tasks.
- Monitor equipment continuously to ensure proper operation and minimal downtime.
- Clean waste from equipment body and wheels or tracks regularly.
- Interact professionally with internal and external customers.
- Complete all assigned operating and labor tasks proficiently.
- Operate equipment safely in compliance with all regulations and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Abilities Needed:
- Ability to perform physical tasks including sitting, standing, reaching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing.
- Ability to withstand bumpy rides on equipment.
- Willingness to undergo training on other landfill equipment as needed.
- Dependable, self-motivated, and capable of identifying daily operational requirements.
- Ability to work in weather-exposed conditions.
- Good verbal communication skills for effective and professional interaction.
- Must pass written and operational tests for certification.
- Ability to read and speak English sufficiently to understand and respond to instructions and safety training.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently lift/carry up to 10 lbs.
- Occasionally lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
- Continuously push/pull up to 10 lbs.
- Frequently push/pull up to 20 lbs.
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl.
- Occasionally climb or balance.
- Work in areas with dust, odors, mist, gases, and airborne matter.
- Work amidst mechanical, electrical, and other hazards.
Additional Conditions:
- Exposure to high traffic and tight driving areas.
- Exposure to residential and commercial waste.
- Flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Availability for 24-hour emergency calls.
- Legally eligible to work in the U.S.
- Valid driver’s license (if applicable).
- Successful completion of pre-employment testing.
- Ability to read and speak English sufficiently for communication and safety training.
