Job summary

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT), a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., is hiring for a Heavy Equipment Operator in Detroit, MI. The role involves processing scrap metals using various machines, ensuring safety protocols, and maintaining equipment.

Responsibilities include operating crawlers and other heavy gear, loading materials, sorting metals, and assisting mechanics as needed. Candidates should meet basic education requirements and be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including wheeled crawler and pedestal crawlers from various manufacturers.
• Load and unload materials from storage, docks, and containers using equipment like magnets and grapples.
• Sort metals and recyclables to separate high-grade materials and remove non-conforming metals.
• Perform daily equipment inspections and maintain clean, safe work areas.
• Interact with drivers or customers to direct or assist them as needed.

FPT isawholly-ownedbusinessofCleveland-Cliffshas an immediate opportunity oanHeavyEquipmentOperatorat one of our Detroit, Milocations.TheHeavyEquipmentOperatoris responsible forthe processing of scrap metals using various tools and equipmentincludingcrawlers.

Summary ofResponsibilities:

• Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), remove hazards asidentified, andmaintaincleanliness of the site.
• Operate&maintainheavy equipment including but not limited to wheeledcrawlerand pedestal crawlers from various manufacturers such as Caterpillar,Sennebogenand Liebherr.
• Operate&maintainequipment movement in response to hand signals or radio commands.
• Load and unload materialsfrom storage,productionareas, docks, delivery vehicles,staging areas,or containers usingequipment including but not limited to a magnet and grapple.
• Sort a variety of recycled materials and metals to separate out high-grade metals andremovesany non-conforming metals.
• Load baler and shredder using grapple or magnet.
• Operate&maintainmobileequipment including but not limited to forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweeper, and/or water trucks.
• Perform tasks involving physical labor using tools, including but not limited to standard hand tools, torch, bander, sawzall, and wire snips.
• Perform daily inspections on all equipment as required.
• Identifyscrapincluding the grade and type of material and any undesirable elements within the material.
• Responsible for positioning trailers and containers around the yard and emptying gaylord boxes asrequired.
• Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping
• Assistsmechanics in the maintenance of equipment including plant equipment
• Interacts with customers or drivers to direct orassistthem
• Performs other tasksandoperates& maintainsotherequipmentasrequired

MinimumQualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma/GED or may consider 1+ years ofheavyequipment operator experience.
• Mustbe able to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Ability to work independently
• Good communicationand interpersonal skills
• Ability to maintainaccuraterecords
• Ability tofollow oral and written communication
• Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects
• Ability to endure physical and outdoor workon a daily basis.
• Ability toliftupto 50lbs.
