Job summary

City of Bismarck is seeking a road maintenance equipment operator to operate heavy equipment (backhoe, loader, grader) and perform asphalt repairs and street maintenance. You will work on winter snow/ice removal, often on 12-hour shifts, and assist with traffic control at work sites.

Responsibilities include equipment upkeep, pre/post-trip inspections, and maintaining communication with dispatch. Must read, write, and perform basic math, with 1–2 years of related experience or an apprenticeship

Qualifications

• Requires high school level reading/writing and math.
• Usually 1–2 years in a similar role or completion of an apprenticeship.
• Knowledge of streets, ROW maintenance, and safety policies.

Responsibilities

• Perform asphalt street repairs and crack sealing.
• Maintain and inspect assigned vehicles and equipment (pre/post-trip).

Job description

This position operates heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of city roads and streets.

• Participates in a variety of snow and ice removal operations, on call 24/7 during winter months, operating 12 hour shifts 7 days a week during snow and ice fighting operations.
• Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, motor grader, and other heavy equipment.
• Makes asphalt street repairs with paver, roller, durapatcher, hotbox and cold mix patch; seals cracks.
• Operates brine making equipment.
• Operates a street sweeper to clean city streets.
• Installs traffic signs and pavement markings.
• Operates tractor and bush hog to maintain rights-of-way.
• Maintains radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
• Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Sets up and assists in traffic control at work sites.
• Performs related duties.
• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsement issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated, obtained within six months of employment.
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. City of Bismarck does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
• Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and right-of-way maintenance.
• Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
