Job summary

City of Sheboygan's Department of Public Works seeks a skilled automotive and heavy equipment technician to perform repairs on trucks, loaders, and related machinery, including electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent, 3+ years in heavy equipment maintenance, and a Wisconsin CDL with endorsements B minimum (A preferred). The role requires physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of recent, relevant experience in automotive, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Vocational schooling or technical degree in mechanics preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin CDL with endorsements B minimum; A preferable or ability to obtain within three months.
  • Thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, drive trains, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, shop drawings, or sketches and work from these drawings.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to lift 50–75 pounds and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and repairs on automotive, trucks, and heavy equipment (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic).
  • Maintains, repairs, and overhauls motorized and non-motorized equipment for safe operation.
  • Performs bodywork, painting, welding, and fabrication as needed.
  • Conducts routine preventive maintenance and safety compliance.
  • Operates shop cranes, lifts, and related equipment safely during repairs.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares required reports.
  • Operates plow trucks and snow/ice removal equipment; hauls materials as required.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area; participates in housekeeping.
  • Communicates effectively with coworkers to coordinate work and report issues.
