Job summary

North Slope Borough in Alaska seeks a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to service and repair light to heavy equipment, including engines, hydraulics and drivetrains.

The role requires five years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic or NSB trainee, plus mandatory certifications (IS 100/200/700/800, CPR/First Aid, HAZWOPER, SPCC, RCRA). Travel to village sites is expected and overtime may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or 12 years of education and related work experience.
• Five years of work experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or NSB Trainee Career Ladder.
• IS 100, IS 200, IS 700 and IS 800 certifications required.
• CPR, AED and Basic First Aid certifications required.
• Ability to obtain site-specific RCRA training within probation.
• Ability to obtain HAZWOPER certification within probation.
• Ability to obtain Small Quantity Handler training within probation.
• Ability to obtain SPCC training within probation.

Responsibilities

• Daily inspections, fueling, check fluid levels, lighting, tires and startup and safety inspections of equipment.
• Schedule and Perform routine preventive maintenance.
• Perform minor and major repairs to include all aspects of repairs, electrical, drive train, suspension, engine, heating, hydraulic to equipment.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose drivability problems and repair on equipment.
• Operate a variety of diagnostic tools and electrical, air and hand tools.
• Welding and fabricate as needed.
• Perform minor body work on equipment.
• Maintain records, work orders, purchase request, quotes, timesheets, daily and monthly reports.
• Attend safety meetings and training sessions as required.
• Travel to and work within North Slope Borough villages.
• May be required to work non-traditional work schedule to include evenings, holidays and weekends.
• May be subject to 24 hour on call status.
• Operate vehicles and equipment to diagnose and ensure operating efficiency.
• Clean and maintain equipment, tools and the general work area.
• Support responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities and operations.
• Consistently build knowledge and expertise about current job;
• Perform other duties as assigned.
