Job summary

City of Corpus Christi is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for the Aviation/Airport division. The role diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and related systems on heavy equipment and airport generators to ensure safety and reliability.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, 2 years of experience, Class A CDL within 1 year, and Forklift Certification within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Safely diagnose and repair emergency and non-emergency vehicles and equipment including brakes, steering, electrical systems, hydraulics, and more.
• May perform machinist and welding activities.
• Maintain equipment by checking fluids, leaks, belts, hoses, and cooling systems.
• Inspect belts, lamps, batteries; replace worn parts.
• Test and replace water pumps, power steering pumps, alternators, and belt tensioners.
• Repair and maintain vehicle air conditioning systems.
• Drive/operate equipment as needed for repairs and tests.
• Coordinate team efforts and update work data in the system.
• Promote safety and keep work sites clean and orderly.
• Perform maintenance on large airport emergency generators.

Description

Overview

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic's primary function is to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, structural, fuel, air conditioning, and hydraulic systems on heavy, construction, and miscellaneous equipment according to safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Safely diagnose and repair emergency and non-emergency vehicles and equipment using various techniques, tools, equipment, computers, platforms, and systems; to include, but not limited to, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, body work, hydraulics, cooling systems, fuel system, tires, and exhaust system
• May be required to perform machinist and welding activities
• Maintains equipment by checking fluid levels, check for leaks, improper operation, adjust belts, adjust and repairs brakes, repair lights, replace hoses, lines and switches. Clean out radiators and tracks
• Inspect and replace worn out fan belts, lamps and batteries
• Test and replace worn out water pumps, power steering pumps, alternators, and belt tensioners
• Repair and maintain vehicle air conditioning systems
• Inspect clutch, electrical wiring and Freon levels; all level of repairs
• Drive/operate equipment as needed for repairs, to and from vendors for service and repairs, and as a test for safety, to perform diagnostics, and to ensure repairs are complete
• Coordinates team effort by completing work orders, filling in required data for work and entering data into computer
• Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
• Maintains work site for cleanliness and safety
• Maintenance, diagnose and repair of equipment malfunctions on large airport emergency generators
• Maintain all preventative maintenance services as required
• Ensure they are properly fueled and lubricated and ready for duty
• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Non Exempt – Full-Time
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services
