Job summary

Mittera Philadelphia LLC is seeking a Heatset Press Operator to set up, operate, monitor, and maintain heatset web offset presses, delivering high-quality printed materials safely and efficiently.

You will review job specifications, adjust ink and tension, monitor quality, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with Prepress, Bindery, Maintenance, and Production teams to ensure on-time production while upholding safety standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2–5 years heatset web offset press experience preferred.
  • Experience with Goss, Heidelberg, MAN Roland, Komori or similar presses preferred.
  • Strong color management and print quality knowledge.
  • Able to read production orders and technical specs.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with production systems.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate heatset web offset presses per job specs.
  • Review orders and requirements before startup.
  • Adjust ink, water balance, alignment, color density, folding, web tension.
  • Monitor press performance and adjust to maintain quality.
  • Verify color consistency and registration to spec.
  • Troubleshoot press and print quality issues to minimize downtime.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Inspect materials for production suitability.
  • Maintain production records and logs.
  • Coordinate with Prepress, Bindery, Maintenance, and Production teams.
  • Follow safety policies and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Assist training of less experienced operators.
  • Identify productivity and waste-reduction opportunities.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Description

The Heatset Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and maintaining heatset web offset printing presses to produce high-quality printed materials in a safe and efficient manner. This position ensures production schedules, quality standards, and waste reduction goals are met while maintaining equipment performance and workplace safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate heatset web offset printing presses according to job specifications.
  • Review production orders, work instructions, and customer requirements prior to press startup.
  • Adjust ink, water balance, registration, color density, folding, and web tension to achieve required print quality.
  • Monitor press performance throughout production runs and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality standards.
  • Verify printed materials meet customer specifications for color consistency, print registration, and overall appearance.
  • Troubleshoot press, mechanical, electrical, and print quality issues to minimize downtime.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs on press equipment.
  • Inspect paper stock, inks, coatings, and other materials to ensure suitability for production.
  • Maintain production records, quality documentation, downtime reports, and material usage logs.
  • Coordinate with Prepress, Bindery, Maintenance, and Production teams to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Assist with training and mentoring less experienced press operators and press assistants.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, and waste reduction.
  • All other duties as assigned
Requirements
Required Skills and Abilities

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of heatset web offset press operating experience preferred.
  • Experience operating commercial printing presses such as Goss, Heidelberg, MAN Roland, Komori, or similar equipment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of color management, printing processes, and press controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret production orders, layouts, and technical specifications.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with manufacturing or production tracking systems.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires use of proper body mechanics with pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, squatting, kneeling, and bending
  • Pushing/pulling and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Requires fine motor hand and arm movement, manual dexterity and coordination
  • Requires near visual acuity
  • Requires working around and operating departmental equipment
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department in the facility
  • Requires the ability to function in a professional manner under stressful circumstances
