Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of medical terminology coursework within 6 months of start date.
  • Participates in mandatory in-service training and continuing education.
  • Prefer prior experience in a Health Information department.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical record practices.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and typing 40 wpm with 95% accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Performs initial QA of inpatient, outpatient surgery, and rehab records to ensure completeness and regulatory compliance by analyzing records per procedure.
  • Abstracts acute care records to maintain a valid database by entering data elements into patient records per department procedure.
  • Abstracts medical records with 98% accuracy.
  • Ensures records are available for coding and physician completion to meet Joint Commission standards and departmental goals.
