Job summary

NYC Health + Hospitals is seeking a skilled Boiler Operator to operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and related equipment across public facilities. The role requires maintaining several specialized licenses and certifications throughout the assignment, with duties spanning inspections, preventive maintenance and staff supervision.

Applicants must hold a High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license and may need additional NYC certifications.

Qualifications

• A valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license issued by the NYC Department of Buildings. License must be maintained during employment.
• Certain positions require within 90 days of appointment a valid Certificate of Fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler and/or Air Compressor by the NYC Fire Department.
• Certain positions require a Certificate of Equivalent Instruction and/or a Restricted Asbestos Investigator Certificate by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and/or a Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (Unlimited Capacity) by the NYC Fire Department and/or EPA CFC/Hazards certificates.

Responsibilities

• Operates, maintains and adjusts boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, equipment for heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, lighting and related equipment in public buildings, municipal pumping stations and incinerators.
• Mains periodic inspections of equipment and performs minor repairs.
• Performs preventive maintenance.
• Takes responsible charge of a watch, and directs subordinate personnel.
• Operates control consoles in control rooms as needed.
• Prepares requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Instructs and trains subordinates and other personnel.
• Reads and logs meters, gauges and other recording devices.
• Keeps records and makes reports.
• Inspects low pressure boilers in accordance with NYC Buildings Department procedures.

Certificate of Fitness: Standpipe/Automatic Sprinkler/Air Compressor

Certificate of Equivalent Instruction/Restricted Asbestos Investigator
