Job summary

Regions Hospital is seeking a friendly and organized Health Unit Coordinator to support the General Med Surgery unit. You will be the initial contact for patients and visitors, performing clerical duties and helping maintain patient records, with a training program on the electronic health system.

You will work a 0.6 FTE schedule (28 hours/week) with 12-hour shifts and every third weekend rotation, reporting to the nurse manager/charge nurse. Strong customer service and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year clerical or healthcare experience or recent graduate of a clerical/healthcare training program.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, providers and staff.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to use office equipment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Completion of Health Unit Coordinator or related healthcare education program.
  • Previous experience using an electronic medical record.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact on the unit and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Perform clerical/receptionist tasks on the unit, organize supplies and maintain records.
  • Prepare and maintain patient records; input data into the electronic health record system.
  • Coordinate communication between staff, patients, families, care providers and other hospital departments under nurse management.

Regions Hospital is hiring a friendly, organized, and adaptable individual to join the General Med Surgery unit as a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC)! This unit focuses on inpatient medical surgical patients. This unit believes in the power of partnership and to provide the best care for our patients it takes everyone involved. Individuals who hired into this role receive a weeklong training about the electronic health system and how to use it effectively to ensure they can be that partner for good. Taking on the role as a Health Unit Coordinator means you will use your communication and critical-thinking skills to support the nursing staff and create a welcoming environment for patients and visitors.

As a Health Unit Coordinator, you serve as the first person of contact on the unit and will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service to patients and visitors through welcoming behaviors, effective communication, and information sharing. In addition to customer service, this position simultaneously performs clerical/receptionist functions on a patient unit which includes but is not limited to, organizing, and maintaining unit supplies necessary for daily activities, preparing and maintaining patient records, preforming data entry into the electronic system, acting as a resource to medical staff regarding hospital protocols and communicating between staff, patients, families, care providers, and between the unit and other hospital departments. This position works under the supervision of the nurse manager/ charge nurse.

Work Schedule/FTE:

This position is a .6 FTE (28 hours a week) 12-hour days with every third weekend rotation.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum of 1 year clerical or healthcare experience or recent (within 1 year) graduate of a clerical/healthcare training program
  • Skill and ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to respond patiently and effectively to questions asked by patients, family, providers and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with patients, visitors and coworkers
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to use office equipment
  • Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively
  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in completing tasks, ensuring accuracy and preventing errors to maintain high-quality outcomes.
Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Completion of a Health Unit Coordinator or related healthcare education program
  • Previous experience using an electronic medical record
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Demonstrates understanding of patient rights and privacy
