Job summary

The Commonwealth Fund is seeking a Program Officer to manage a portfolio of grants within the Equity program, synthesize evidence, and develop strategic recommendations. You will serve as a thought partner to the Senior Vice President and engage with grantees, researchers, and policymakers.

The role emphasizes environmental scans, landscape analyses, and disseminating findings through policy briefs and presentations. Hybrid work from NYC with collaboration across teams.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent experience in public health, public policy, health services research, medicine, public administration, or a related field.
• 5-7 years of professional experience in philanthropy, health policy, health care, research, nonprofit leadership, or a related field.
• Strong research, analytical, and strategic skills, including environmental scans and landscape analyses, synthesize findings into strategic recommendations.
• Experience with project management and project leadership, including prospecting and developing concepts, managing projects, and coordinating timelines and deliverables.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including executive writing for internal, external, and public audiences.
• Strong engagement and collaboration skills, with the ability to build credibility with grantees, researchers, policymakers, funders, and community stakeholders.
• Sound judgment and initiative, ability to work with limited supervision and prioritize competing work.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to advancing equity and improving health outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Develop grantmaking strategies and manage a portfolio of grants advancing Equity team goals.
• Work with grantees to strengthen project design, objectives, and evidence-grounded approaches.
• Draft proposal summaries and materials for internal review and Board consideration.
• Steward active grants with regular contact, review deliverables, and provide feedback on rigor and timelines.
• Prepare grant memoranda summarizing outcomes and lessons for future funding.
• Conduct landscape analyses to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities in health equity.
• Collaborate with the SVP to produce program plans and synthesize findings for strategic options.
• Disseminate findings through policy briefs, publications, webinars, and external presentations.
