Scope

Under the direction of the Branch Manager, the Head Teller supports the company's core values and focuses on providing exceptional client experience. The Head Teller supervises the Teller function. This includes effectively managing the day-to-day Tellers' operations. Additionally, this person will be responsible for performing Teller functions, opening new accounts, scheduling and coordinating the operating duties of the branch.

Duties and Responsibilities
Head Teller and Client Service Responsibilities
  • Be able to perform all duties of a Teller.
  • Responsible to comprehend and to be able to perform all client transactions in a prompt and efficient manner and to train/coach tellers to do the same.
  • Assists clients with resolution of account problems and issues.
  • Receives checks for cash and for deposit to accounts, verifies amounts, examines checks for proper endorsement and possible fraud, and enters deposits into computer system.
  • Cashes checks and processes withdrawals; pays out money after verification of client and balances.
  • Participates in sales goals that may be established by management for such items as, but not limited to, debit cards, credit cards, digital and mobile banking, and referrals for other bank products and services.
  • Offers, opens, and refers, where appropriate, other financial institution services such as checking and savings accounts, consumer and mortgage loans, IRAs, certificates of deposit, safe deposit boxes, Treasury Management, Wealth Management, Merchant Services, Commercial, etc.
  • Cross-sells financial institution services such as safe deposit boxes, savings, CDs, digital and mobile banking, debit cards, credit cards, etc.
  • Receives and processes mortgage, consumer loan and other payments and ensures the payments match balances due.
  • Recommends the best bank products, including checking accounts, to clients by using the Service Excellence Process and asking for business.
  • Identify sales opportunities at the counter and at the drive thru and make professional referrals to other team members for products and services that you cannot open yourself.
  • Responsible for placing holds on accounts, as necessary, for uncollected funds.
  • Counts, verifies and packages coin and currency for buy/sell to vault and Fed.
  • Balances cash drawer at the end of the shift and compares total amounts to computer generated proof sheet. Reports any discrepancies to the supervisor, as necessary.
  • Responsible for checking night depository bags and recording proper information on the financial institution's forms.
  • Assists in the bank-by-mail function, where available.
  • Comply with all department and company policies and procedures.
  • Support the Tellers in goals that may be established by management for such items as, but not limited to, debit cards, credit cards, digital and mobile banking, and referrals for other bank products and services.
  • Head Teller will have primary responsibility for the cash vault, including shipping and receiving of vault cash.
  • Must be a "sales champion" for the deposit and retail loan products of the bank. Must be motivated to work with clients to deepen existing relationships and generate new business.
  • Responsible for the overall management of the Tellers, ensuring cash audits and all transactions are accurate, coaching and praising team members as necessary.
  • Call clients to offer additional services and products.
  • Help clients with their financial needs.
Managing Team
  • Manage Tellers. Provides input on the hiring and review process.
  • Ensures that scheduling is appropriate to meet client traffic volumes.
  • Ensures that all the Tellers provide exceptional client service.
  • Conducts periodic operational training that covers security, regulatory compliance, and other procedural issues, as necessary.
  • Coach/train Tellers on opening accounts, cross-selling and referrals.
Branch Operations
  • Monitors audit requirements and compliance issues for department.
  • Keep abreast of changes in products, policies, and procedures, and attend training as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  2. Sales: Must understand the concept of sales as it pertains to offering financial services and products and be able to cross-sell to clients that have come into the bank for products and services.
  3. Supervisory/Leadership: Must be able to manage and lead the Tellers. Must have the ability to set and measure standards and determine how team members perform against those standards. Must be able to provide constructive feedback and coaching.
  4. Oral/Written communication skills: Must be able to communicate thoughts clearly, both orally and written.
  5. Client Service: Must understand client needs and the elements of client service and be able to refer clients to appropriate team members for further assistance.
  6. Change management: Must embrace change. Must see change as an opportunity for growth. Must be willing to express and support management’s ideas to affected team members.
  7. Knowledge of rules and regulations that pertain to Tellers and deposit account products and services.
  8. Computer Knowledge: Must have basic ability to operate computers, typewriters, calculators, and other standard office equipment.
